Sanctioning policy
The Articles empower the Association to hold local and international competition on a regular basis, to oversee the selection of Asian representative teams, and to maintain and enforce codes of conduct binding on its members. Sanctioning is how those powers are exercised in practice: it is the Association's confirmation that an event meets the standards expected of competition played under its name.
Tiers of sanctioned competition
Every competition the Association sanctions is placed in one of three tiers. The tier is set by what is at stake in the competition, and it determines what the host must provide. Events on the calendar that the Association does not sanction — World Lacrosse championships, the Olympic Games — carry no tier.
Continental Championship
Competition that decides an Asian title, or that qualifies teams for world or Olympic competition. The Association owns the competition, allocates the hosting, and carries the full set of obligations below.
Representative Competition
Sub-regional championships and other competition contested by national teams, including the Asian Lacrosse Games. Organised by a member body under the Association’s standards, with the Association appointing the head official.
Sanctioned Open
Club, invitational, youth and open competition — the Hong Kong Junior Lacrosse Open, the Okinawa Open and events like them. The host runs the competition; sanctioning confirms that it is played under the Playing Rules and that its results are recognised.
What each tier requires
Obligations step down with the tier. Nothing in this table displaces a requirement imposed by World Lacrosse or by the law of the host territory.
| Requirement | Tier 1 | Tier 2 | Tier 3 |

| Player eligibility | Verified by the Association against its eligibility rules | Verified by the Association against its eligibility rules | Declared by the host |

This tier structure was adopted in draft and has not yet been ratified by the Board. Until it is, it describes the standards the Association expects rather than obligations it enforces.
Sanctioning criteria
An application for sanctioning is assessed by the Board, or by a committee to which the Board has delegated the function, against the following requirements.
- 01 Standing of the host The host is a member body in good standing, with no outstanding subscription or disciplinary matter, and has the organisational capacity to deliver the competition proposed.
- 02 Playing rules The competition is played under the current World Lacrosse playing rules for the discipline concerned, with any permitted variations stated in the competition regulations in advance.
- 03 Officiating standards Officials hold accreditation appropriate to the category of competition, and appointments for championship competition are confirmed by the Association.
- 04 Athlete eligibility Participating athletes are registered with a member body and meet the eligibility and nationality requirements set out in the competition regulations.
- 05 Anti-doping The competition is conducted in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the anti-doping rules applicable in the host territory.
- 06 Safeguarding and conduct The host applies the Association's safeguarding policy and code of conduct, with particular regard to competition involving minors, and has a procedure for receiving complaints.
- 07 Medical provision and insurance Appropriate medical cover is in place for the duration of the competition, and the host holds insurance adequate to the event and the venue.
- 08 Reporting Results, participation data and a competition report are submitted to the Association within the period specified in the sanctioning decision.
Applications. A member body seeking sanctioning should apply to the Association well in advance of the proposed first day of competition; the Board will confirm the current notice period on request. The Board may attach conditions to a sanction, and may withdraw a sanction where a condition is not met. Contact the Association →
