Constitution & legal status

A constituted, non-profit governing body.

The Association is incorporated as a company limited by guarantee and not having a share capital, with its Headquarters being established in Hong Kong with the support of the Hong Kong Government. Its income and property are applied solely towards the promotion of its objects, and may not be distributed to its members. On dissolution, any remaining property must pass to another body with similar objects, not to members.

The Association exists to make lacrosse one of the most widely played sports in Asia; to hold local and international competition on a regular basis; to oversee the selection of Asian representative teams; to serve as a centre of excellence in coaching, teaching and officiating; and to maintain and enforce codes of conduct binding on its members.

The Headquarters will serve as a hub for coordinating lacrosse development across Asia: raising participation and competitive standards in member territories, and expanding regional competition and development programmes.

The Association will also advocate for the inclusion of lacrosse on the programme of future Asian Games, and strengthen collaboration with sports organisations across the region.

Geographic coverage

Coverage across the continent

The Association's membership spans five sub-regions of Asia, from the Arabian Peninsula to the Pacific. "Asia" is defined in the Association's Articles as the countries and territories whose National Olympic Committees belong to the Olympic Council of Asia.

Membership

Member bodies and recognition

Full member directory →

Membership is open to national associations and comparable bodies from the countries and territories of Asia. The Association distinguishes between members whose national body is recognised by its National Olympic Committee and those which are not yet recognised — a distinction written into the Articles and reflected in voting rights.

Territory Sub-region NOC recognition Membership class Votes World Lacrosse

Each territory listed holds a national federation on the World Lacrosse member register, and is classified under the Association's Articles. Membership class follows National Olympic Committee recognition, which is the test the Articles apply.

Corporate and Honorary membership classes also exist, for sponsors and for individuals or bodies approved by the Board. Neither carries voting rights. All voting is conditional on the annual subscription having been paid in full.

One point requires a Board decision. The Articles define Associate Member and Provisional Member in identical terms — each is a body not recognised by its National Olympic Committee that is otherwise in good standing. Nothing in the text separates them, yet an Associate Member holds one vote and a Provisional Member holds none. The classification below uses World Lacrosse standing as an interim test. It should be confirmed by Board resolution, or the Articles amended, before this register is treated as definitive.

Standards

Sanctioning policy

The Articles empower the Association to hold local and international competition on a regular basis, to oversee the selection of Asian representative teams, and to maintain and enforce codes of conduct binding on its members. Sanctioning is how those powers are exercised in practice: it is the Association's confirmation that an event meets the standards expected of competition played under its name.

Categories of sanctioned competition

Category 1

Continental Championship

Competition owned and awarded by the Association, determining Asian champions in a given discipline and age group. Hosting is allocated by the Board to a Full Member following an expression-of-interest process.

Category 2

Championship Qualifier

Competition through which member bodies qualify for continental or world championship competition. Entry, eligibility and officiating standards are set by the Association and are binding on all participating members.

Category 3

Sanctioned Open or Invitational

Competition organised by a member body and sanctioned by the Association on application. The host retains organisational control; the Association confirms that the standards below are met and that results are recognised.

Category 4

Recognised Development Event

Competition or festival serving a developmental purpose — introductory, youth, school or university — recognised by the Association without the full sanctioning requirements applicable to championship competition.

Sanctioning criteria

An application for sanctioning is assessed by the Board, or by a committee to which the Board has delegated the function, against the following requirements.

  1. 01 Standing of the host The host is a member body in good standing, with no outstanding subscription or disciplinary matter, and has the organisational capacity to deliver the competition proposed.
  2. 02 Playing rules The competition is played under the current World Lacrosse playing rules for the discipline concerned, with any permitted variations stated in the competition regulations in advance.
  3. 03 Officiating standards Officials hold accreditation appropriate to the category of competition, and appointments for championship competition are confirmed by the Association.
  4. 04 Athlete eligibility Participating athletes are registered with a member body and meet the eligibility and nationality requirements set out in the competition regulations.
  5. 05 Anti-doping The competition is conducted in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the anti-doping rules applicable in the host territory.
  6. 06 Safeguarding and conduct The host applies the Association's safeguarding policy and code of conduct, with particular regard to competition involving minors, and has a procedure for receiving complaints.
  7. 07 Medical provision and insurance Appropriate medical cover is in place for the duration of the competition, and the host holds insurance adequate to the event and the venue.
  8. 08 Reporting Results, participation data and a competition report are submitted to the Association within the period specified in the sanctioning decision.

Applications. A member body seeking sanctioning should apply to the Association not less than [number] days before the proposed first day of competition. The Board may attach conditions to a sanction, and may withdraw a sanction where a condition is not met. Contact the Association →

This policy is published for transparency and is subject to the Articles of Association, which prevail in the event of any inconsistency. Where the Association's calendar lists competition sanctioned by World Lacrosse, that status is shown against the individual event.
